| New Construction Booming in Asia, Steady in U.S., Slowing in EU |
Quick Frozen Foods International, a Global Cold Chain Alliance Strategic Partner, recently reported on the growth rate of worldwide cold storage construction. In the U.S., QFFI reports that warehouse operators are making better use of their space, minimizing operating costs by making use of every possible cubic foot. Warehouses are also relying on fewer facilities, expanding existing structure to meet their customers' needs. Facilities are being built larger and taller with more narrow aisles to maximize capacity.
Meanwhile, QFFI interviewed Global Cold Chain Alliance European Division Director Theo van Sambeeck about the international cold storage construction. Van Sambeeck does not expect much new construction in Western Europe, but notes that Central Europe should see construction of new PRWs. There are also several new projects in progress in Russia. The outlook is even more positive in the Middle East with a multitude of new projects and where investors typically want facilities with a capacity of at least 50,000 pallet positions (about 7 million cubic feet). India and China are also "hot" areas for growth with many EU or U.S.-based companies building in both emerging markets. Both articles can be found in the online April 2008 edition on the QFFI website. |
| New Federal Regulation Requires Code of Ethics |
| The Hirschler Fleischer's Construction Law Group recently reported that a new federal regulation in the U.S. requires all federal contractors and subcontractors to have a code of business ethics and conduct. The new law also requires federal contractors to post specific fraud hotline posters at the jobsite and the business office. These new requirements are designed to foster the highest degree of integrity and honesty in federal contracting and apply to all contracts and subcontracts for federal jobs of $5,000,000 or more with performance periods of 120 days or more. Under the new law, many federal contractors will also be required to adopt training programs, internal control systems and mechanisms for reporting suspected fraud. See the rule. |
