The first meeting of ECSLA, which will include a Warehouse Council Meeting, is scheduled for September 6 and 7 in Brussels. Although the framework for this meeting has been finalized by the European Office, discussion with the new board is required before it can be published. Trends Survey 2010 |
Industry leaders around the world are invited to participate in the IARW Trends Survey 2010. The purpose of this survey is to collect member perspective on current cold storage industry trends. The results are presented at the Trends Forum during the Assembly of Committees. Please take 5 to 10 minutes to answer this survey by July 12, 2010. All responses will be anonymous. The GCCA Assembly of Committees takes place July 31 to August 3 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington DC. Participation is open to all members of IARDS, WFLO, IACSC, IRTA and IIAR and registration is free. Click here for more details

India Cold Chain Expo |
The 2nd edition of the India Cold Chain Expo takes place on November 11-13 in New Delhi. The event focuses on the refrigerated warehousing, cold storage construction, refrigerated logistics and transportation industry. New ECSLA Board to meet in Amsterdam |
| The new ECSLA Board will meet for the first time In Amsterdam (Netherlands) on July 19. The national associations are represented in the new board by Wim van Bon (Netherlands), Rainer Wittenfeld (Germany), Manuel Cabrera Kabana (Spain), and Luc Put (Belgium). Corporate members are represented by Hans van Leeuwen (Netherlands), Robert McNamara (Greece), Derk van Mackelenbergh (Netherlands), and Garry Tilburn (United Kingdom).
On the agenda will be strategic, organizational, and financial issues.

European Operational Benchmarking Study |
With 18 facilities representing a total of 9 countries, this 1st GCCA European Operational Benchmarking Study has received a good response and will definitely supply participants with reliable information to benchmark their operations and identify areas for improvement. The deadline for returning the forms is July 7th. After analysis, the reports will be sent to participants first half of August.
The members of the Benchmarking Working Group would like to thank their colleagues for participating and are looking forward to discussing the next steps with them September 6-7 in Brussels.

Cold chain logistics in the Ukraine |
| The American Chamber of Commerce in the Ukraine organizes an open logistics and transportation committee meeting devoted to cold chain logistics in the Ukraine on Thursday, 8 July 2010 at 4:00 PM at the Chamber's Conference Facility (Horizon Park Business Center, 12, Amosova vul., 15 Floor). The meeting will focus on the current state of the cold chain in the Ukraine and discuss solutions for improvement. New veterinary checkpoint for BLG Coldstore |
BLG Coldstore in the port of Bremerhaven (Germany) has taken a new veterinary checkpoint in to use earlier this month. The new facility has 10 docking ramps and sections for foodstuffs of animal origin, plant foodstuffs and plant protection services. The container terminal in Bremerhaven is one of the largest in Europe. The checkpoint will handle over 3 million euro worth of goods annually. |

Greece wants to privatize Port of Piraeus |
| According to press reports, Greece wants to privatize the Port of Piraeus (near Athens) to Chinese investors. Chinese shipping giant Cosco has decided to spend $700 million to construct new infrastructure and expand the ability of the Piraeus port to take in cargo. The plan is to turn Piraeus into "Rotterdam south," referring to Europe's current busiest port. The move is one of the many that Greece is planning in order to improve its economic situation. For the Chinese it is not only an investment opportunity, but Piraeus could offer a new route for shipping Chinese goods to the European continent. |
Seabrex continues as Rotterdam Fruit Wharf after bankruptcy |
After filing for bankruptcy last week, Seabrex, the largest handling, freight forwarding and distribution company for perishable products in the Port of Rotterdam, will continue its activities as Rotterdam Fruit Wharf. The 'new' company will have a capacity of 22.000 pallet positions - a reduction of almost 20.000, which also means that about 100 employees will be laid off. The bankruptcy was, according to an official statement, the result of among other a substantial decrease in the volume of fresh produce arriving in Rotterdam during the past 12 months and the recent emergence of competing handlers further inland in the Benelux region. Increased role for Asian companies in world dairy sector |
| The new Global Dairy Top-20 from Rabobank shows the recent growth of Japan and China in the world dairy sector. The Top-10 is still headed by Nestlé, and dominated by players from Europe and the US, but Japanese contender Meiji Dairies moved up 3 places to number 11, and Yili from China shot into the rankings for the first time at number 17. Changing diets and market size are the most important reasons for the growth in Asia. Read more |
New book on sustainability in the food supply chain |
Supply Chain Europe has published the book "Creating and managing a sustainable food supply chain". The report focuses on how businesses in the food chain can meet the challenge of sustainability both upstream and downstream from 'farm to fork'. There is attention for global sourcing and sustainability, meeting the challenge in Europe, and supply chain issues and also room for recommendations. More details

TDG wants to reduce energy usage by 12% |
Logistic service provider TDG is working towards reducing energy consumption by 12% within its temperature controlled storage units around the United Kingdom.
Some of the recent investments include separate pedestrian doors, roller-shutter doors for the main bays and the installation of liquid pressure amplification to reduce power consumption.TDG has also introduced a web-based automatic monitoring system to check cold store temperatures every five minutes, provides early warning of potential problems such as refrigerant leakage and enables TDG to remotely operate the refrigeration plant and other electrical systems such as lighting. |
Bulgaria establishes central food safety agency |
| The Bulgarian government has announced plans to establish a food quality control body, according to the country's national press. The new agency will tackle food processing, farming conditions, agricultural/horticultural control, and animal health care and is said to be modeled on the European Food Safety Authority. |
